They are one of the most critical pieces of the engine puzzle and under great strain when in operation.
In automobile internal combustion engines, con rod bushes are used for joining the piston to the crankshaft hence they must be light and strong enough to transmit the thrust of the pistons to the crankshaft. When the con rod bush becomes one with the piston the Connecting Rods weight and stability then becomes a prime factor in the smoothness of the engines rotary motion, assembly and sturdiness.
To assure extended engine life, the rods bushes have to be aligned properly and the bearing surfaces must be smooth and perfectly round. Maintaining the connecting rods is a vital and many times an essential step in the engine rebuilding process. They are under tremendous strain from continuously stopping and changing direction, combined with the weight of the piston and pace of the engine beating on the bearings and pulling on the rod bolts that hold everything together.
Modern con rods bushes are usually made of steel but can also be manufactured using aluminum and titanium which are able to endure heavy loads without bending or twisting. I- beam and H-beam are the popular connecting rods installed in the automobiles.
The I-Beam con rod bushes are used because it gives a first-class combination of light weight and strength while H-Beam con rod bushes are very firm so it can handle superior compressive loads without bending.
