The Used Chevette Engine – Still Going Strong
The Chevrolet Chevette
General Motors (GM) first introduced the Chevrolet Chevette in 1975 as part of its worldwide T platform of cars. The T platform was the GM automobile designation for subcompact cars. GM manufactured the Chevette under the T platform from 1975 to 1986 (model years 1976 to 1987). Even though it wasn't the most powerful car, the Chevette had worldwide appeal and was especially popular in South America and the U.S. It was the best-selling small car in America for 1979 and 1980.
The Chevette Engine
Chevette engines were initially manufactured in 1.4 liter or 1.6 liter models that delivered between 53 to 70 horsepower. A four-speed manual transmission came standard, while a three-speed automatic transmission was optional. The EPA estimate on the Chevette engine was 28 miles per US gallon city and 40 miles per US gallon highway, which was unheard of at the time.
The Chevette engine went through many changes, throughout the years of its manufacture. The Chevette Raly 1.6 had a 1.6 liter overhead-cam four-cylinder, rated at 60 hp, while the 1977 Chevette engines offered 57 hp and 63 hp. By 1979, the Holey two-barrel carburetor was standard on all Chevette models and in 1981 a Diesel Engine option was available. In 1981 also, a new engine Cylinder Head design called the swirl-port had its debut; its purpose was to improve torque and fuel economy.
